Basic Overview

The MBTA Fare Visualization app uses some GTFS (Google Transit File Specification) files released by the MBTA to visualize fares throughout the day. Currently the app loads static test data from a 40Mb (Approx. 480,000 lines) text file that specifies the fares that were received at various stations throughout the day.

Stops File

The stops file contains information about all the stops except Bus in the MBTA system. Here is an example of this file:

stop_id,stop_code,stop_name,stop_desc,stop_lat,stop_lon,zone_id,location_type,parent_station
place-alfcl, ,Alewife Station, ,42.395428,-71.142483, ,1,
place-andrw, ,Andrew Station, ,42.330154,-71.057655, ,1,
place-aport, ,Airport Station, ,42.374262,-71.030395, ,1,
place-aqucl, ,Aquarium Station, ,42.359784,-71.051652, ,1,
place-armnl, ,Arlington Station, ,42.351902,-71.070893, ,1,

FareGate Files

The FareGate files contain information about different fares collected throughout the day. Here is an example of this file:

time, stop_name, card_type, route_name, amount
"08/12/2009 07:07:24","Newton Centre","Smart Card Mifare 1k","Subway Green Line",1.00
"08/12/2009 07:40:28","Newton Centre","Smart Card Mifare 1k","Subway Green Line",1.00
"08/12/2009 08:05:15","Newton Centre","Smart Card Mifare 1k","Subway Green Line",1.00
"08/12/2009 08:09:11","Newton Centre","Smart Card Mifare 1k","Subway Green Line",1.00
"08/12/2009 08:11:02","Newton Centre","Smart Card Mifare 1k","Subway Green Line",1.00

This file is HUGE. I'm working on making processing this thing a little better.
